Walking With The Word Of God
A devotion for the 4th Sunday of Easter · by Jacob Adofo
THEME: The Shepherd’s Voice
Scriptures: Psalm 23 and John 10:1-10
Key Scriptures:
Psalm 23:1 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
John 10:3b-4 – “He calls his own sheep by name and
leads them out... he goes ahead of them, and the sheep
follow him because they know his voice.”
The Meaning
In Psalm 23, David describes a God who provides
rest, restoration, and protection even in the
“darkest valley.”
Moving to John 10, Jesus identifies Himself as that
Shepherd. He isn’t a “hired hand” who runs when things
get tough; He is the Gate and the Guide. He knows
your name, who you are, and your fears. His leadership
is not based on driving us forward with a whip, but on
leading from the front so we can follow His voice.
The Importance
This Sunday reminds us that we are not aimless
wanderers. In a world full of competing “voices”—social
media, anxiety, or high expectations—the importance
of these texts lies in identity and security. Knowing the
Shepherd’s voice allows us to ignore the “thief” who
comes to steal our peace. It shifts our focus from what
we lack to the abundance found in His presence.
Concluding Story:
A famous orator once recited Psalm 23 at a large
gathering. His voice was magnificent, with the correct
diction and pitch, the applause was deafening.
Afterwards, an elderly quiet pastor was asked to recite
the same Psalm. His voice was shaky and thin, but when
he finished, the room was in tears.
Someone later asked the orator why the reaction was
so different. He replied, “I know the Psalm, but that man
knows the Shepherd.”
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd.
When the world is loud, help me to tune my ears to
Your voice alone. Thank You for the green pastures
and the still waters, and for staying with me in the dark
valleys. Lead me today in paths of righteousness for
Your name’s sake.
Amen.
