Walking With The Word Of God
A devotion for the 3rd Sunday of Easter · by Jacob Adofo
THEME: From Despair to Hope
Scripture Focus
Acts 2:14a, 36–41: Peter declares that the Jesus who
was crucified is both Lord and Christ. The people are
“cut to the heart” and ask what they must do.
Luke 24:13–35: Two disciples walking to Emmaus are
joined by the risen Jesus. They don’t recognise Him
until He breaks bread, at which point their hearts burn
within them.
Meaning: The Power of Recognition
The journey from Luke 24 to Acts 2 is the journey from
confusion to conviction. On the road to Emmaus,
the disciples were blinded by their own grief and
expectations. It was only through the Word and the
breaking of bread that they truly saw Jesus. Acts 2
shows that personal recognition becomes a public
declaration. Peter shows us that knowing Jesus isn’t just
a feeling—it’s a turning point (repentance) that leads to
a new life powered by the Holy Spirit.
The Benefits
Perspective: Like the Emmaus disciples, we learn that
Jesus is often walking with us even when we feel most
alone.
Renewal: Repentance (Acts 2:38) isn’t a punishment;
it’s a refreshing “reset” for the soul.
Community: Both passages end in fellowship—breaking
bread and adding to the number of believers. We aren’t
meant to walk this road solo.
Concluding Story: The Master’s Signature
An old man once walked into an art gallery, grieving the
loss of his wife. He stood before a beautiful, complex
painting but saw only chaotic splashes of dark colour.
He sighed, “It’s a mess, just like life.”
A stranger stood beside him and began pointing out
the subtle highlights, the way the light hit the corners,
and the intentionality of the brushstrokes. As the
stranger spoke, the old man’s eyes shifted. He finally
saw the artist’s signature in the corner. Suddenly, the
“mess” became a masterpiece.
The stranger was the artist himself. The old man’s grief
hadn’t changed the painting, but the Artist’s presence
changed how he saw it. Our lives often look like a mess
of “Friday” sorrows until Jesus stands beside us and
reveals the “Sunday” glory hidden in the details.
A Closing Prayer
Lord, like the disciples on the road, our eyes are often
heavy with the worries of this world. We ask that You
join us in our journey today. Burn within our hearts
through Your Word. Help us to repent of our doubts
and be filled with the joy of Your Resurrection. May our
lives reflect the hope of the empty tomb to everyone we
meet. In the name of our risen Lord we pray, Amen.
