Walking With The Word Of God
A devotion for the 3rd Sunday of Lent · by Jacob Adofo
THEME: Living Water for the Thirsty Soul
Concluding Story: The Empty Jar
SCRIPTURES: John 4:5-42 (NIV)
Nevaeh always felt like she was carrying a heavy,
invisible water jar. Every day, she tried to fill it with
“refreshment”— a new promotion, a better house, or the
approval of friends. But the jar always had a leak. By
evening, she was thirsty and exhausted again.
In John 4:5-42, we find an encounter at Jacob’s Well
that shatters social, religious and ethnic boundaries to
reveal the heart of God.
KEY SCRIPTURES: John 4:13–14
The Promise: “Jesus answered her, ‘Everyone who drinks
of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of
the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.
The water that I will give him will become in him a
spring of water welling up to eternal life’”
The Revelation: “The woman said to him, ‘I know that
Messiah is coming,’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to
you am he’” (John 4:25–26).
The Impact: “Many Samaritans from that town believed
in him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me
all that I ever did’” (John 4:39).
Meaning: Deep Waters and Divine Truth
This passage shows that Jesus intentionally went
through Samaria—a place Jews typically avoided—to
meet a woman who was a double outcast due to her
gender and her past.
One day, she stopped striving and sat in the quiet of
a small chapel. In that stillness, she felt a “voice” in her
heart that didn’t judge her failures but simply said, “You
don’t have to carry that jar anymore.” Nevaeh realized
that she had been looking for life in all the wrong wells.
She left her “jar” of old labels at the altar and walked
out, finally feeling a spring of joy bubbling up from
within that didn’t depend on her circumstances.
Prayer
Our gracious Father, thank You for meeting us at our
“wells” of exhaustion and shame. Forgive us for trying
to quench our spiritual thirst with things that can never
satisfy. Fill us afresh with Your Living Water today. Help
us to leave our old water jars behind and live in the
freedom of Your grace. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Living Water: Jesus uses physical thirst to point to a
deeper spiritual longing that only He can satisfy.
True Worship: He shifts the focus from where we
worship to how we worship: “in spirit and truth”.
Unconditional Grace: Jesus already knew her “messy”
history but offered her the greatest gift, showing that no
one is beyond His reach.
Spiritual Benefits
Complete Satisfaction: Unlike worldly pursuits (money,
relationships, or status) that leave us thirsty again,
Christ’s “living water” provides lasting soul-peace.
Freedom from Shame: The woman came to the well at
noon to avoid people; she left her water jar and ran to
them, transformed from an outcast into an evangelist.
Direct Access: We learn that we don’t need a perfect
past or a theology degree to encounter God or share
His love.
A prayer for the people of The Middle East
Dear Jesus, please bring peace to the people of the
Middle Eastern countries. You have the peace that
surpasses all understanding.
Please give peace to these lands and bring
hope into their hearts as they face
a time of fear, uneasiness, and worry.
Please surround them with your
hope, peace, and love.
Thank you, Lord, for always
being there for all of us.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
